Director’s Statement

In 2012, a friend who was living in Zimbabwe began sharing stories of the socio-political and racial turmoil that ensued when the government began seizing the farms of the minority white population.

The Zim, inspired by true accounts, is the first film that dramatizes these events.

A century of British rule had ended, but the disparagement in wealth – especially in white and black land ownership – remained. This created a climate of anger and resentment that Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe could effectively capitalize on.

Once the Fast Track Land Resettlement Program was signed, mobs immediately formed to march on white-owned farms. Hundreds of people were threatened, attacked and murdered.

I was deeply moved by the stories of black farmworkers risking their lives to protect the families of the white farmers. Many of these farmworkers spent their entire lives working alongside their white countrymen, and refused to stand by while they were being brutally evicted from their homes.

Four years were spent in research, interviews, writing, fundraising, and casting this project. My team and I created a fully-rounded narrative that presented balance to both sides of this polarizing issue. Meticulous efforts were made to recreate the look and feel of Zimbabwe during that time.

Though the story is a uniquely African one, the themes we explore transcend geography. Humanity has struggled with the ghosts of colonization and racial oppression for millennia, yet the wounds still remain fresh for so many. Perhaps through stories like these, a dialogue can be sparked.
