Director’s statement:

“How do we really experience sexual awakening? How does a child confront the intangible guilt of being different without having the emotional tools to cope? How is that memory engraved in us and effects our adulthood?

These are all question that led me in the creation of Boys. A story based on true events I experienced growing up.

I wanted to show the first, raw moment of sexual awakening. To tell a tender story that carries the complexity, desire and confusion involved in such discovery. It is the condensed silence in those human moments that is most powerful for me.

Part of my responsibility as an artist in this world is to foreground messages I find important by keeping them loyal to the characters and their world. I did everything in my power to refrain from having my message control the characters’ choices. Boys is a human coming of age tale that might be interpreted as having a gay theme, but not necessarily. I believe that only by telling a universal story that focuses on the human components rather than the message- I would be able to show the world we are not that different from each other after all.”
