Rudolf Buitendach – Director

Born in South Africa where he graduated with honors as top student of his year at the Official Film School, Rudolf relocated to England in 1996 when his first feature script ‘White To Move’ got optioned. In London Rudolf swiftly made headway working for The Creative Partnership and The Picture Production Company, to become a top trailer editor.

His true passion being directing however, Rudolf started making shorts, with his first 35mm short SUCK finding distribution in the US through Universal and THE FLOOR BECAME THE CEILING DVD distribution through Lowave in Paris.

After two Golden Trailer nominations (the Academy’s of the Trailer World) Rudolf was offered a contract with Trailer Park in Hollywood where he edited on big studio campaigns including ‘I-Robot’ and ‘The Life Aquatic’.

His next short INDOOR FIREWORKS was the world’s first fully digital film, shot on the groundbreaking 2K Viper filmstream camera and praised by the likes of fellow director Darren Aronofsky and composer Angelo Badalamenti (who scored the film). It preceded Michael Mann and David Fincher’s use of the same technology and was picked up by Canal+ for European distribution.

His short REARVIEW was nominated by BBC3 as best short of 2006 in their new talent strand and also screened at the LA International Film Festival, Cannes, Clermont Ferrand and Venice. It was shortlisted by the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival for a Golden Melies nomination.

In 2008 Rudolf was shortlisted by filmaka.com as finalist in their international filmmaking challenge by a Jury including Werner Hertzog, Wim Wenders and Paul Schrader. Rudolf made it all the way to the finals amongst a select group of 12 filmmakers.

In 2009 Rudolf directed the feature length documentary THE GOONER REVIEW starring Paul Kaye, David Soul and Nick Hornby.

In 2010 Rudolf edited the Wesley Snipes feature film

GALLOWWALKERS that was sold worldwide and distributed by LionsGate.

In 2011 Rudolf directed his debut theatrical feature DARK HEARTS starring Kyle Schmid (Copper), Lucas Till (X-men), Sonja Kinski (from the Kinski acting Dynasty) and Goran Visjnic (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), nominated as best film at the 20th Raindance Film Festival and picked up for distribution by Vertical Entertainment in the US and Klockworx in Japan, amongst others. It recently screened on Showtime and TCM.

In 2012 Rudolf directed his second theatrical feature WHERE THE ROAD RUNS OUT starring Isaach De Bankolé (casino Royale), Juliet Landau (Buffy) and Stelio Savante (A Beautiful Mind). It was the first feature film ever to shoot in Equatorial Guinea, West Africa. This film was selected for the Variety sponsored 2014 San Diego Film Festival where it won both the ‘BEST OF FESTIVAL’ award against Academy contenders like ‘Home’ and ‘The Imitation Game’ as well as the San Diego Tribune’s award for best film. It was also in competition at the Heartland Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival, AFI Silver, Durban International and won ‘BEST DIRECTOR’ and ‘BEST ACTOR’ at the Academy accredited Sunscreen Film Festival in Florida.

In 2013 Rudolf directed the celebrity play 110 STORIES at the Nate Holden Theatre in Los Angeles, a 9-11 tribute for charity. It received a standing ovation from an audience that included Sydney Poitier and other luminaries. The cast included Golden Globe nominee Diane Venora, Ernie Hudson, Jon Heder, Stephen Bauer and Dash Mihok.
